England have won the last three Test series against India—in 2011 (4-0), 2012 (1-2) and 2014 (3-1)—but go into the Rajkot Test, the first of five Tests versus Virat Kohli’s men, on the back of an embarrassing 108-run defeat at the hands of Bangladesh, who, through their historic eighth victory in Mirpur, levelled the two-Test series 1-1.
On the flip side, India go into the five-Test series against Alastair Cook’s men, having won their last four Test series and while on a 13-Test unbeaten run.
This emphatic run which Kohli’s men are on, began in Srilanka in August 2015, when they beat an inexperienced Srilankan side led by Angelo Mathews 1-2 in a three-Test series, returned home and thrashed South Africa 3-0 in a four-Test series in November-December 2015, went to West Indies in July 2016 and won 0-2 in a four-Test series and, most recently, whitewashed New Zealand 3-0 just three weeks back.
Rajkot and Visakhapatnam, the venues for the first and second India v England 2016-17 Tests, will be hosting their first-ever Test matches, with Mohali, Mumbai and Chennai being the venues for the third, fourth and fifth Tests.
The five-Test series between India, the numero uno Test side in the world currently, and England, who are fourth in the ICC Test rankings, should be just as exciting as any other series played between these two cricketing nations over the last decade.
