An All-round Daredevils Showing Downs Kings XI by 51 Runs

Match report

Delhi Daredevils have in place a formula that they are committed to and is working for them at the moment. At a time when the other IPL outfits are keen to bowl first and chase down totals, which, mind you, a lot of them are successful at, Zaheer Khan won the toss in Delhi’s first home match and chose to bat first. And boy, this ploy worked wonders for the Daredevils against a powerful Kings XI Punjab side, who had won their first two matches by chasing down 164 and 149.

On this evening, though, Delhi were efficient with the bat and the ball, and Kings XI had no answers to their proactive hosts.

Sam Billings played an absolute gem of a knock [55 (40), 9×4] at the top of the order and set the tone for the Delhi innings. He made the most of the hard, new white kookaburra ball which came on nicely off the pitch, and collected runs all round the dial. One shot which particularly stood out was a slog sweep, literally, off Sandeep Sharma, and the ball whistled away behind square on the leg-side for a four.

Scoring runs became a little difficult during the middle phase of the innings and when KC Cariappa and Axar Patel were in operation. Delhi scored 49 runs in the powerplay but between overs 7-14, only 61 runs were scored for the loss of four wickets (110/4). Delhi seemed to lose their way during these eight overs.

Corey Anderson, however, provided the final flourish for his team, bludgeoning a troika of sixes and fours and dragging Delhi close to 200 (188/6, to be precise). In his customary style, the New Zealand all-rounder got his bottom hand into play and swatted the ball in front of square on either side of the pitch and also delivered a couple of blows down the ground. 68 runs came off the last five overs for Delhi, and no doubt which team went into the change rooms feeling good.

Glenn Maxwell must have been disappointed with the lines and lengths almost every one of his bowlers bowled, and made life easier for the Delhi batsmen. The fast bowlers, in particular, were too short and drifted down the leg-side on numerous occasions. This line of attack fortuitously resulted in a wicket for Varun Aaron, as Wriddhiman Saha acrobatically dived to his left and took a catch to dismiss Karun Nair, who tried to tuck the ball off his hips and got it too fine for his own liking.

On most other grounds in the country and against most bowling attacks, a target of 189 can be chased down. But at the Feroz Shah Kotla, where the pitch was on the drier side, and against a bowling attack which is as well-rounded as Daredevils’s is, the task was always going to be difficult.

Manan Vohra and Hashim Amla had provided blazing starts to the Kings XI innings in their three previous matches. On this night, however, both of them fell cheaply and with no foundation having been laid, the middle order, boasting an additional batsman (Eoin Morgan) on the night, found themselves with too much to do. Again, the quality of the Daredevils’s bowling attack is such that the pressure is constant and the asking rate in a big chase can keep climbing… to a point where the batting unit subconsciously know that they cannot do the necessary catching up.

None of Kings XI’s batsmen played the kind of knocks Billings and C Anderson played, and unenviably, the visitors had no way back after being reduced to 65/5 in the 11th over.

Kings XI were poor all around, and the performance of Axar Patel, who took 1/33 and scored 44 (29), with bat and ball was the sole positive to come out of another disappointing night.
