Kings XI’s Better Bowling Display Helps Seal a 26-run Win Over Gujarat Lions

Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) sealed a deserved 26-run win over the seventh-placed Gujarat Lions (GL) in what was a crucial match for these two teams, whose chances of making the IPL 2017 playoffs continue to hang by a thread.

Batting first after losing the toss, Kings XI posted a formidable 188/7, with Hashim Amla playing another great Twenty20 knock at the top of the order, three evenings after scoring his maiden hundred in the sport’s shortest format. The key to Kings XI posting the total they did was the sizeable partnerships they had throughout their innings, which didn’t begin well with Manan Vohra falling in the second over for a four-ball two.

But from here on, Shaun Marsh and Glenn Maxwell forged crucial partnerships with Amla for the second (70 runs) and third (47) wickets, and drove Kings XI forward. Gujarat’s bowlers neither troubled any of the visitors’ batsmen nor strung together tight overs.

However, the match turned on its head when Gujarat struck twice in the space of three balls, removing Amla on the last ball of the 14th over (13.6) and Maxwell on the second ball of the 15th (14.2). Maxwell played a shot he shouldn’t have against Ravindra Jadeja and was trapped in front of the stumps.

At 132/4, Gujarat would have hoped to restrict Kings XI to a total around 170, with all the specialist batsmen dismissed. Axar Patel, though, batting at No. 6, played the ideal knock for the match situation and the one his role necessitates. Patel was particularly severe against Dwayne Smith, who Gautam Gambhir had to bring on because Nathu Singh pulled up at the start of his third over and couldn’t bowl more than the two overs he had during the powerplay.

This over of Smith, the 19th of the innings, cost Gujarat 18 runs and was probably the difference in Kings XI reaching 188 and the score they might have otherwise ended with. Patel struck a six to begin the over with and then followed it up with a four and six off the second and third balls. He was dismissed on the fourth ball, but not before he had done significant damage with a 17-ball 34.

In pursuit of 189 for victory, Gujarat were dealt a massive blow in the very first over. Brendon McCullum missed a Sandeep Sharma full toss and was hit plumb in front of the stumps. The hosts, as a result, didn’t get off to the start they had against Knight Riders.

Suresh Raina walked in at No. 3 and did lend the innings stability. He wasn’t quite in the rhythm of two nights ago, but with his experience and ability, Raina was a massive wicket for both the teams. What Kings XI’s bowlers did well was not concede easy runs and get the required run rate, which was 9.45 runs per over at the start of the innings, to jump up to 10 and above.

The ever-increasing run-rate forced Lions’ batsmen to play the big shots, giving the opposition bowlers a great chance of dismissing them as well. In playing a big shot, Raina holed out to deep mid-wicket off Axar’s left-arm spin in the ninth over and with team’s total at 70. Alongside Axar, KC Cariappa bowled a great spell of off-spin as well and the Axar-Cariappa duo were instrumental in Kings XI beating Gujarat.

Dinesh Karthik struck the ball well but he also was waging a lone battle that ended in a lost cause. Karthik finished with 58*, but a significant lack of support from the middle and lower order meant that Gujarat fell short by 26 runs. Hashim Amla was awarded the man-of-the match for his stylish 65 off 40 balls.

With this defeat, Gujarat remained 8th on the points table at the end of their first leg fixtures. And, in what is an insurmountable setback, Dwayne Bravo will take no part in IPL 2017, Raina confirmed at the toss. Kings XI, on the other hand, jumped up to fourth on the table and more importantly, brought their four-match losing streak to an end.
