IPL scheduling has over the years been such that not all teams play each other during the first leg of a season. And then, during the second half, they play the home and away fixtures within a short span. IPL 2017 schedule has followed a similar pattern as well, with Delhi Daredevils (DD) and Gujarat Lions (GL) facing off for the first time this season, on May 4 and in match 42.
Form guide: DD vs GL
DD vs GL Head-to-head
With Gujarat Lions (GL) making their IPL debut last season, Delhi and Gujarat have faced each other twice, and their head-to-head record stands at 1-1. Lions beat Daredevils in the first meeting between these two sides at the Feroz Shah Kotla, and Daredevils won at the SCA Stadium in Rajkot in the return fixture.
Match 42: DD vs GL Playing XI
Delhi’s batsmen produced a satisfactory performance against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Tuesday night, to keep their team in the hunt for the playoffs.
Delhi, though, are without key players for tonight’s match against Gujarat Lions. Sam Billings (Delhi) and Jason Roy (Gujarat) are two players who have left their franchises to resume international duty with England. For Delhi, in addition, Zaheer Khan looks likely to remain on the sidelines after picking up a hamstring injury in the defeat to Knight Riders last week.
Other than Kagiso Rabada, the rest of the Delhi bowling attack fared well against an explosive Sunrisers’s batting line-up. But the South African pacer is unlikely to be axed for the second home clash in two evenings, against Gujarat, who are seventh on the IPL 2017 points table.
Because they won their last match and the team fared well on the whole, after five consecutive defeats, the Delhi team management might not make more than one change to their playing XI for the first meeting of this IPL season with Lions. Shahbaz Nadeem, who dropped out of the Delhi side on Tuesday, might replace Jayant Yadav against Gujarat.
DD’s probable playing XI vs GL is as follows: 1. Karun Nair (c), 2. Sanju Samson, 3. Shreyas Iyer, 4. Rishabh Pant (wk), 5. Corey Anderson, 6. Angelo Mathews, 7. Chris Morris, 8. Kagiso Rabada, 9. Shahbaz Nadeem, 10. Amit Mishra, and 11. Mohammed Shami
Actual playing XI for Delhi: 1. Karun Nair (c), 2. Sanju Samson, 3. Shreyas Iyer, 4. Rishabh Pant (wk), 5. Corey Anderson, 6. Marlon Samuels, 7. Pat Cummins, 8. Kagiso Rabada, 9. Shahbaz Nadeem, 10. Amit Mishra, and 11. Mohammed Shami
Suresh Raina’s Gujarat have, like their opponents for tonight’s match, had a poor season and they don’t even have as much of a chance as Delhi to qualify for the playoffs. They have failed to click as a unit whose bowling attack has been their weakest link. The likes of Basil Thampi, Ravindra Jadeja and James Faulkner, despite their endeavors, have struggled to pick wickets in a defending or a chasing cause.
The aspects that will please the team management, though, are Ankit Soni providing control during the middle phase of the innings with his clever variations in pace and trajectory, and Ishan Kishan playing the kind of innings you expect of your opening batsmen in the Twenty20 format.
With Andrew Tye ruled out of the rest of the season due to a dislocated left shoulder, Dwayne Smith is expected to keep his place despite playing a horrible shot to be bowled on the first ball he faced last match.
GL’s probable playing XI vs DD: 1. Suresh Raina (c), 2. Brendon McCullum, 3. Ishan Kishan, 4. Aaron Finch, 5. Dinesh Karthik (wk), 6. Dwayne Smith, 7. James Faulkner, 8. Basil Thampi, 9. Pradeep Sangwan, 10. Ravindra Jadeja, and 11. Ankit Soni
Gujarat’s actual playing XI is the same as what Cricfooty had predicted.
