Two young men had the day of their lives when Delhi Daredevils (DD) took on Gujarat Lions (GL) in the reverse fixture. Rishabh Pant (97) and Sanju Samson (61) hit blistering half-centuries in a 209-run chase and led their team to a memorable victory with 15 balls to spare.
These two young guns and their team-mates were, however, brought crashing down to earth just two nights after they beat Gujarat, with Mumbai Indians (MI) inflicting the biggest margin of defeat in the history of IPL, on Delhi.
GL vs DD Head-to-head
Following their win earlier this season, Delhi now lead their head-to-head record against Gujarat by 2-1 in three meetings so far.
This is the first time that Lions will host Daredevils at the Green Park in Kanpur, which has been one of Gujarat’s home grounds since IPL 2016.
Lions: WLLTW (from left to right, most recent result first; current position on the points table: 6th)
Daredevils: LWWLL (current position on the points table: 7th)
Match 50: GL vs DD Playing XI
Gujarat played to their strength against Kings XI Punjab and won comfortably, by six wickets. Their formula for success has been the same throughout this season, but not always have Gujarat been able to play with a settled XI.
They just might against Daredevils, having produced a satisfactory performance and won their last match. Gujarat’s playing XI against Kings XI is also arguably the best they can field with the resources available to them.
GL’s probable playing XI vs DD: 1. Suresh Raina, 2. Dwayne Smith, 3. Ishan Kishan, 4. Dinesh Karthik (wk), 5. Aaron Finch, 6. Ravindra Jadeja, 7. James Faulkner, 8. Basil Thampi, 9. Dhawal Kulkarni, 10. Ankit Soni, and 11. Pradeep Sangwan
Gujarat’s actual playing XI is the same as what Cricfooty had predicted.
Delhi will be without two of their key players for their last three matches of this season, with Chris Morris and Kagiso Rabada having left for national duty. The two South Africans had at different stages of the ongoing season been critical to their IPL franchise, who will definitely miss the versatility and balance rendered by these two players. Angelo Mathews is another Daredevil who has left for national duty.
Rabada’s place will likely be taken up by Carlos Brathwaite, who has played only one match so far this season. Pat Cummins, Marlon Samuels and Corey Anderson are expected to complete the quota of four overseas players. Other than this forced change, Delhi are not expected to tinker with the playing XI which has brought them grand and sporadic success this season.
DD’s probable playing XI vs GL: 1. Zaheer Khan (c), 2. Karun Nair, 3. Sanju Samson, 4. Shreyas Iyer, 5. Rishabh Pant (wk), 6. Corey Anderson, 7. Marlon Samuels, 8. Carlos Brathwaite, 9. Pat Cummins, 10. Mohammed Shami, and 11. Amit Mishra
Delhi’s actual playing XI is the same as what Cricfooty had predicted.
Prediction: Match 50
Both these teams will look to chase again, particularly with chasing teams having done well in the small number of Twenty20 matches played at the Green Park in Kanpur (teams chasing have won the three T20s played here). And, in such scenarios, the teams who bowl and field better tend to come out on top.
The loss of Rabada is a huge one for Delhi, whose bowling attack has been among the better ones in the league. And the weakened Delhi bowling attack might just play into a strong Gujarat batting line-up’s hands.
