Iyer the New Hero for Daredevils in Successful 196 Chase Against Gujarat

Gujarat Lions were once again let down by their largely young and inexperienced bowling attack, who failed to harness the good work the batsmen had done in posting 195/5. On the other hand, Delhi Daredevils pulled off yet another thrilling win, with Amit Mishra hitting two boundaries in two balls in the final over to take his team to victory. Though inconsequential, this victory will provide a great degree of satisfaction for Daredevils, who have done the double over the Lions.

Shreyas Iyer made a sensational 96 (57) and kept his team in the hunt despite losing one batting partner after another. Not until Pat Cummins joined Iyer in the middle, did Delhi look like they might go on to complete a successful run chase once again. Cummins walked in at the fall of Carlos Brathwaite’s wicket with the innings’s score at 121/6 in the 14th over. With 75 needed off the last 37 balls, the general consensus was that Gujarat had enough runs on the board and Delhi, with only one recognised batsman in the middle, might struggle this time around.

But the Iyer-Cummins partnership, which was worth 61 runs, garnered runs at a greater clip than by any other and at any other stage of the Delhi innings. The 15th over went for 17 runs, 16th cost 14 runs and 21 runs were scored off the 17th over, bringing the equation down to more than a manageable 23 runs off the last 18 balls. Through Thampi and James Faulkner, who bowled the 18th and 19th overs respectively, Lions managed to just about stay in the contest. Delhi needed to score nine runs off the final over and had lost Cummins as well, meaning Iyer had an added responsibility on his shoulders.

As destiny would have it, Iyer too was dismissed by Thampi, on the second ball of the final over, leaving Mishra and Mohammed Shami to take their team over the line. With 7 runs required off the last 4 balls, the Haryana leg-spinner struck a couple of fours to send his team-mates in the dugout into delirium. Gujarat players, understandably, were heartbroken. They had fielded brilliantly and posted a score that could and should have been defended, even though the size of the ground was small and as many as 51 fours and 10 sixes were hit.

Batting first after losing the toss, Gujarat made a formidable 195/5, with Aaron Finch making a 39-ball 69 (6×4 and 4×6) and Dinesh Karthik also making a massive contribution (40 runs off 28 balls) in his team getting to the total they did. Finch and Karthik were involved in a 92-run stand for the fourth wicket and complemented each other well. Ishan Kishan played quite a significant knock once again at the top of the order, making 34 runs off 25 balls and getting his team off to a relatively good start.

On a night both the bowling attacks suffered, Delhi’s better batting under pressure led them to a thrilling two-wicket victory. Shreyas Iyer, for his truly magnificent innings of 96 (which included 15 fours and two sixes, and which he went on to say has been his best IPL innings), was awarded the man-of-the-match.
