Consolation win for Royal Challengers by 10 runs over Daredevils

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) continued their dominance over Delhi Daredevils (DD) and gave their fans something to cheer at the end of what has been a wretched IPL season for them, with a 10-run win at Virat Kohli’s home ground, the Feroz Shah Kotla. The 56th match of IPL 2017, the last of the league stage, had nothing riding on it, but with an under-strength playing XI which featured only three overseas players, Royal Challengers beat a Delhi team who were at full strength. In spite of this victory, RCB remained rock-bottom on the IPL 2017 points table.

Having opted to bat first, Bangalore posted a competitive 161/6, with Virat Kohli scoring a half-century (58, 3×4 and 3×6) and Chris Gayle, although not his usual self, making 48. The Kotla pitch was on the slower side and shot-making wasn’t easy. Which is why the visitors will have been happy with the total they had put on board.

In reply, Delhi were on course until the 12th over, with Shreyas Iyer and the young Rishabh Pant in the middle and the hosts needing 78 runs for a victory from the final nine overs. But this was when the innings began to come apart and Daredevils ended up being bowled out for 151 on the last ball of the match. The lack of contributions from the Delhi middle and lower order and good bowling from the likes of Harshal Patel and Avesh Khan, who played their first matches of this IPL season, were the reasons for Delhi failing to chase down 162.

Harshal Patel, for taking 3/43, was awarded the man-of-the-match.
