Delhi Daredevils (DD) opened their IPL 2017 campaign with a 15-run defeat to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. Rishabh Pant, who joined the Delhi camp just hours after being at the funeral of his deceased father, played an authoritative innings of 57 off 36 balls. But the 19-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman received no support from the Delhi middle and lower order, and finished on the losing side, though the quality of his innings deserved better.
Delhi take on Bangalore in the last match (match 56) of the IPL 2017 league stage, with just pride to play for and the aim of finishing on a high.
DD vs RCB head-to-head
Delhi and Royal Challengers have faced each other 18 times in the Indian Premier League, with the head-to-hard record being led by the latter, who hold a 10-6 lead over the former. These two teams have been involved in a tie, in IPL 2013, and Bangalore went on to win the super over. The DD v RCB match-up has seen one no-result as well.
At the Feroz Shah Kotla too, Bangalore lead the head-to-head record against Delhi by 5-2 in seven meetings.
Daredevils: WWLWW (from left to right, most recent result first; current position on the points table: 6th)
Royal Challengers: LLLLL (current position on the points table: 8th)
Match 56: DD vs RCB Playing XI
Delhi fielded just three overseas players in their last home match, against Rising Pune Supergiant, and they are likely to just stick with Corey Anderson, Marlon Samuels and Pat Cummins for tonight’s match against RCB. Ben Hilfenhaus was brought in as a replacement for Jean-Paul Duminy and the Tasmanian seamer might tempt the team management to pick him for what is an inconsequential match. In which case, Samuels or Cummins might make way.
The Delhi batting line-up is settled and much of the bowling attack has remained the same throughout this season.
DD’s probable playing XI vs RCB: 1. Zaheer Khan (c), 2. Sanju Samson, 3. Karun Nair, 4. Shreyas Iyer, 5. Rishabh Pant (wk), 6. Corey Anderson, 7. Marlon Samuels/Ben Hilfenhaus, 8. Pat Cummins, 9. Shahbaz Nadeem, 10. Amit Mishra, and 11. Mohammed Shami

AB de Villiers flew back home last weekend and this evening’s visitors will have to take on Delhi without their talisman. Shane Watson might well be the one who replaces the South African superstar. Other than this forced change, Royal Challengers are expected to retain the 10 other players from the heavy defeat to KKR at home.
RCB’s probable playing XI vs DD: 1. Virat Kohli (c), 2. Chris Gayle, 3. Mandeep Singh, 4. Travis Head, 5. Kedar Jadhav (wk), 6. Shane Watson, 7. Pawan Negi, 8. Sreenath Aravind, 9. Aniket Choudhary, 10. Yuzvendra Chahal, and 11. Samuel Badree

Prediction: Match 56
Daredevils are the confident side who have won four of their last five matches and have done particularly well at home this season, winning four and losing just two. Delhi have registered handsome victories at the Feroz Shah Kotla and are clicking as a unit. Tonight’s hosts, therefore, will start as firm favourites against a beleaguered Bangalore side who might be happy that they have to turn up for just one last time in IPL 2017.
