England and Bangladesh have qualified for the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 semi-finals from Group A, following the tournament hosts’s win over Australia by 40 runs according to D/L method on Saturday (June 10) in what was the final match of this group. Bangladesh had beaten New Zealand on June 9 (Friday) and needed England or the weather to do them a favour by denying Steve Smith’s men a win. The Poms, through a thoroughly dominating performance over the two-time champions in this competition, take the Bangla Tigers with them into the last four.
These two teams will learn who they will face in the semi-finals, which are scheduled for June 14 (Wednesday) and June 15 (Thursday), on June 13 (Monday), when the final Group B match will be played and the league stage of the 10th edition of the Champions Trophy comes to a conclusion.
Good one Suhith!
Thank you, Karthikeyan. This scenario is immensely interesting.
i think there is one other permutation. if Eng beat Aus such that Aus’ NRR is -0.408 or worse, and the Ban v NZ match is a no-result, then the table will be:
Eng 6 pts
Ban 2 pts -0.407 nrr
Aus 2 pts -0.408 nrr (or worse)
NZ 2 pts -1.740 nrr
in such a scenario, Eng and Ban go through to semis.
True, Ken. Well done!
But if Australia play to potential, they will beat England.
If England vs Australia (June 10) fails to produce a result and either New Zealand or Bangladesh, who are locked on a point each, win, then the net run rate will become a deciding factor.
This statement is not true since the tournament rule states that in case teams are tied on points, the first rule is that the team with highest number of wins goes through to the next stage which in this case would be New Zealand or Bangladesh (and Australia will be knocked out).
Thank you very much for correcting, Karthik.
