If you are a sports fan, chances are that you almost always have to rummage through TV listings and broadcast schedules to understand if your favourite football team or sportsperson is live on TV. And this scenario applies to the football fans in India, in particular, who are keen to follow their favourite football team and their journey in the various competitions during a season, but they don’t always manage to.
Like the 2017-18 season, when the Carabao Cup matches apart from the final weren’t broadcast in India, fans in India will not be able to view the 2018-19 season of English Football League (EFL) Cup, which is known as the Carabao Cup and English League Cup.
None of the TV broadcasters in India currently holds the broadcasting rights to telecast the EFL Cup, which will come as a great disappointment to the football fans in the country.
Last season’s final between eventual winner Manchester City and Arsenal, played at the Wembley Stadium, was shown on MTV in India, after the previous rounds of fixtures weren’t viewable to the TV audience. The fixtures leading up to the final were, however, streamed by Veqta.in and JioTV.
Until the 2016-17 season, this Cup competition was being shown on Ten Sports network, which was bought by Sony Pictures Network (SPN) in 2016. The League Cup broadcasting rights have not been bought by SPN.
As early as the third round, which is when the Premier League clubs who have qualified for European competitions enter the competition, Liverpool, who have won the competition eight times, played Chelsea in arguably the tie of the round, and fans of the two clubs and football fans in India were unable to watch that iconic fixture.
Defending champion Manchester City played Oxford United away, while Manchester United hosted Derby County in the Carabao Cup third round. Arsenal played host to Brentford.
