Shortly after the start of the 2017-18 season, 14 of the Premier League clubs voted in favour of the summer transfer window being closed prior to the start of the campaign. (Manchester United and City were among the five clubs who voted against this proposal.)

Teams can now buy players only until 21:30 IST on the Thursday (August 9) before the start of next season. They can, however, offload players until the usual transfer deadline day (August 31). This change will come into effect from the 2018-19 season.

With this being the World Cup year, the English top-flight clubs will be left with only 25 days to add to their squads.

The last campaign also began on August 11 (Friday night BST), with Arsenal taking on Leicester City at the Emirates Stadium and winning 4-3.
