1st Test, statistical highlights

  • India recorded their sixth Test win on Australian soil, and their 48th overseas, beating Australia by 31 runs in an absorbing Test at Adelaide Oval.
  • Cheteshwar Pujara made his 16th Test century (a 246-ball 123, punctuated by seven fours and two sixes) in the first innings of the Adelaide Test to help India recover from 127/6 to a respectable 250. When India were looking to set a target in the second innings, the Saurashtra batsman made his 20th Test half-century (71 runs off 204 balls, 9×4). In the second innings, Ajinkya Rahane made his 16th Test half-century (a 147-ball 70, 7×4), combining well with Pujara first and taking India to a 300-plus total.
  • For a while, Shaun Marsh led Australia’s fight to chase down 323 in the second innings and four innings of the Test. He made his 10th Test half-century (166-ball 60, 5×4) before edging behind to Rishabh Pant off the bowling of Jasprit Bumrah.
  • Pant became the first Indian wicketkeeper to take 11 catches in a Test (six in the first innings and five in the first innings), equalling the record set by Jack Russell (1995) and AB de Villiers (213).
  • Virat Kohli, leading India in a Test for the 43rd time, recorded his 25th Test win as Indian captain. He is also the first Asian captain to win Tests in England, South Africa and Australia.
