India in do-or-die territory against buoyant Bangladesh

Match details

The main picture

Expectations of Bangladesh were low before the three-match T20 International series began on Sunday, but Shakib Al Hasan’s two-year ban and the preceding players’s strike appear to have galvanised Mahmudullah and co. At least, their performance in the first T20I was suggestive of that. But having broken their duck in T20Is against India with a matured performance, Bangladesh must operate with the same precision and, if anything, be ruthless against an Indian side who are admittedly vulnerable.

Aminul Islam’s potent leg-breaks and the maturity shown by senior players Soumya Sarkar, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah, with the bat, augur well for Bangladesh as the three-match T20I series moves to Rajkot. The conditions are likely to be different and both teams must adapt. The imperative for both teams is pretty much the same with the series on the line: don’t dwell on what happened at Feroz Shah Kotla, be precise with your execution and take your chances (which India didn’t in the first T20I).

At a press conference on Tuesday, India leg-break bowler Yuzvendra Chahal said that India have “no pressure” on them ahead of the must-win second T20I tomorrow. While staying relaxed is how you want to be as a team ahead of any match, India, playing at home and against an under-strength Bangladesh side, will feel the pressure of expectations. And, you hope, it brings the best out of them as they chase a series-leveling win.

SCA Stadium pitch report and weather forecast

A 21 per cent chance of precipitation is forecast for Thursday evening, with a maximum temperature of 23-degree Celsius in the evening.

The venue has hosted two T20 Internationals so far and both have been high-scoring, with an aggregate of 403 runs scored in the first match and an aggregate of 352 runs scored in the other T20I in 2017. The Test and ODI pitches here, too, have tended to be good for batting and you can expect a good batting strip for the second T20I between India and Bangladesh.

Match prediction

You expect India to raise their game with the series on the line and also tighten up in the bowling and fielding departments. For Bangladesh, as is the case for any team touring India, the challenge is to string good performances back-to-back. These are the objectives for the two teams and you expect the team who execute better to come away with a win.

How and where to watch

The second India vs Bangladesh T20I is being broadcast on the Star Sports network, while Hotstar will provide the live stream.
